Disaster Strikes General Hospital — and the *Real* Victim Is…

General Hospital has us confused. What, exactly, are we supposed to feel about the fallout from Ava leaking the recording of Natalia being the poster gal for homophobia?

We can’t feel sorry for Ava for landing herself in hot water. If she wanted to stick it to Natalia, fine. But she outed Blaze in the process. Not cool. If we feel anything for Ava, it’s bewilderment. For one of the most cunning characters on the canvas, she’s been behaving like an idiot — and for some time, too. (Driving a wedge between Nina and Sonny… to what end? Not telling him about his messed-with meds… why, when he was sure to find out at some point? Ava is usually two steps ahead, but we’d swear she’s forgotten there even are steps! But we digress… )

We can’t feel sorry for Natalia. Even with the radiant Eva LaRue in the role, the character is a voice for closed-mindedness and homophobia for which literally nobody was clamoring. Can you imagine some fan out there going, “OMG, ya know what General Hospital really needs? A bigot! That’d be so cool!” Us, either.

We can’t feel sorry for Kristina. As she said herself, this debacle cost her nothing. Even if she never goes to work at her LGBTQ+ center, it doesn’t seem to be a big deal to her. She’s already forgotten about her metaphorical baby because she’s so focused on the literal one that she’s already dreading having to hand over to Molly and TJ.

We can’t feel sorry for Sonny. He knew who and what Natalia was. And he’s been around the block; he knows how easy it is for a smile on one’s face to hide hate in one’s heart. Are we supposed to nominate him for Father of the Year because he’s ticked on Kristina’s behalf? Bro, she’s gonna have PTSD for the rest of her life after getting an eyeful of Daddy beating the crap out of Dex. Take all the seats.

No, the only person we feel sorry for in this whole mess is Blaze. We’d love for her to have had the strength to defy her mother and live openly years ago. But we can well imagine how heavily Natalia’s influence has weighed her down. Now, instead of being poised to be the next Chappell Roan or Troye Sivan, she’s been set up to be known as the singer who was ashamed of her sexuality.
